4-Session Evening Book Study Begins Wednesday, September 27th
“What is an idol? It is anything more important to you than God, anything that absorbs your heart and imagination more than God, anything you seek to give you what only God can give. An idol has such a controlling position in your heart that you can spend most of your passion and energy, your emotional and financial resources, on it without a second thought. It can be family and children, or career and making money, or achievement and critical acclaim, or saving ‘face’ and social standing. An idol is whatever you look at and say, in your heart of hearts, ‘If I have that, then I’ll feel my life has meaning, then I’ll know I have value, then I’ll feel significant and secure.”
The paragraph above is an excerpt from the late Timothy Keller’s book, COUNTERFEIT GODS: The Empty Promises of Money, Sex, and Power, and the Only Hope That Matters. Keller was a Presbyterian Pastor and author of several thought-provoking books. This book was written in 2009.
Pastor Randy will be leading a 4-session evening study on this book beginning Wednesday, September 27th from 5:30-7 pm in Ascension’s fellowship hall. Soup and sandwiches will be available for a light meal from 5:30 – 6 pm, followed by discussion of the book from 6 – 7 pm. A free-will offering will be available to cover the cost of the meal.
Each participant will be responsible for purchasing their own book. We will cover 2 chapters per week discussing the main points and how they relate to our personal lives. The book is available online. Here is the link specifically for Amazon.

A sign-up sheet will be available in the Narthex for those interested in participating. You may also call the office or email the office with your intent to participate. The book study will also be available via Zoom. That link will be included in the EXTRA and

Outstanding Outreach Opportunities
These are just a part of the 200+ Gift bags assembled for LSS program clients by the congregations of the Northeast Valley Consortium for our outreach service project on God’s Work, Our Hands, on Sunday, September 10th. Receiving LSS staff from right are Jenny Tatum, Director of Volunteer Engagement, Tariq and Abdul from Refugee Resettlement, and Karen Olson, representing Ascension. Lots of God’s love to share with those in need in our community! Thank you to all who participated!
